Ummm… Yummm!

Simple. Just the way I like it. Normally, if I want chocolate chip cookies, it's due to an immediate craving for chocolate. Resulting in the purchase and preparation of a package of break and bake chocolate chip cookies. That's right I don't even bother with the cookie dough log anymore … too much trouble. It's the pre-cut kind for me so I don't have to waste any extra time.

But, then I realized I've never made basic chocolate chip cookies from scratch for the site before. Actually, I'm not even sure if I have ever made them from scratch at all … other than these pumpkin pecan chocolate chunk ones. So this obviously had to be corrected… right away. That's one thing I love about this site. Gives me lots of excuses to bake sweet stuff.

Cookies!

Ingredients

Here's the ingredients. I looooooooove looooove loooove brown sugar.

Cookie Dough

Anyone want to stop here and get a spoon?

Chocolate Chips

No. No. We must have chips. And lots of them.

Baking

Use an ice cream scoop and you can get your cookies to come out the same size when they bake.

When they're done, let them cool slightly before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

IMG_9260

Whoops… dropped one. Okay, so it was more like ten. (smiles innocently)

Perfect!

What to do? What to do? Why eat them right off the tray while they're still warm and gooey and melty, of course. Continue until you are sick. It's the best way.

Cookies

Whatever is left after the craving is satisfied, you can store for an hour later when you finish off the rest with a tall glass of milk.

Chocolate Chip Cookies

2 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1 cup butter, room temperature
1 cup brown sugar
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
2 cups chocolate chips
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking soda and salt with a wire whisk and set aside.
  • With a mixer, beat butter and both sugars until well blended.
  • Beat in eggs and vanilla.
  • Add flour mixture in two additions until combined.
  • Stir in 1 1/2 cups chocolate chips.
  • Use a mini ice cream scoop to drop cookie dough on a parchment covered cookie sheet about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake for 8-10 minutes.
  • Tip: About half way through baking, sprinkle reserved chips on top of cookies. This is just to make them prettier so, some of the chips are seen on top.
  • Makes about ??. (I ate too many before I counted. But a couple dozen for sure.)

  • But if that's too plain for you, then have a little more fun with them and make some ice cream cookie sandwiches.

    Ice Cream Cookie Sandwiches

You didn't think I was going to stop tempting you, did ya?

All you'll need for these is some ice cream and sprinkles.

    Cookie Cutouts
  • Cut cooled cookies out with a circular cutter for smaller, more uniform sandwiches. Or just use the cookies au naturale. Either way, still good.
  • Place a small scoop of ice cream on one cookie. Then place the other cookie on top of the ice cream and press together gently.
  • Roll the sides in a small bowl of sprinkles if you so desire.
  • Make and eat right away before they melt.
  • Cookies & Cream!

    Enjoy!

And for a little more fun, check out Cakespy's illustrated timeline of the chocolate chip cookie. Very cute!

I really wish I had some of these right now. I have had a craving for some home baked cookies lately. I love to make them and store bought just doesn't cut it.

    Comments:

Wouldn't it be easier if you just made them for me? Not everyone owns a circular cookie cutter ;)

I love chocolate chip cookies. Even if I'm allergic to chocolate!

    Comments:

mmmmm!! chocolate chips cookies are the one and only recipe i can make from memory. my mom and i have spent many years perfecting our recipe. we find that a teaspoon of almond extract gives the cookies a really special taste and that using mini chocolate chips instead of regular gives a great chocolate to cookie ratio!

    Comments:

Man they look good - especially in the ice-cream sandwich. What a great idea!

    Comments:

These cookies look like the ones I used to make when I was in junior high! They look great (as does everything you make).

    Comments:

Fabulous! I actually just made a fresh batch of Coconut Ice Cream today....after reading this, I may take it for a test drive sandwiched in between some Double Chocolate Death cookies this week! OMG!!!!

    Comments:

I make a ton of different typw of cookies and bars. But, when I asked my fiance what he wanted me to bake him... he replied plain chocoalte chip cookies. And I replied... Um, I don't have a recipe for those :)

    Comments:

Wow!! This looks like it totally beats my chocolate chip cookie recipe! I just may have to try this to find out :) Yummmm!

    Comments:

oooohhhhhhh me like! Although, have to confess, I buy store bought chocolate chip cookies to answer my craving. Oh well, I'm pretty sure nothing beats home-baked ones. :-)

    Comments:

Ugh I'm about to go ruin my diet now and bake some!!! YUMMY!

    Comments:

Kinda sad that it's now cheaper to buy the premade cookie dough in the giant tubs from Sam's. They have Pillsbury and Toll House. And love being able to bake a whole bunch or half a dozen on demand.

I love your photos by the way. Thanks for sharing!

    Comments:

With this post, you have found a devout fan in my husband. I think he's drooling - I guess I should make these soon!

    Comments:

Your an evil and amazing lady! I want them so badly! :)

    Comments:

I love the ghiradelli chips...if you get the milk chocolate ones they are slightly larger in size and then add some macadamia nuts....those are my go to cookies as of late!

    Comments:

OK so now in this 112 degree heat I am going to have to make some. I use toll house chips...they are the best. Yes eat them hot out of the oven with a cold glass of milk till you are sick! That is the only way! YUM~~~ An American classic!

    Comments:

Ugh. It looks way too delicious. x.x This means trouble for my diet!

    Comments:

I've never sprinkled more chips on top during cooking! That's a great idea. So is using the cutter for a more uniform shape! Yum yum yum!

I am IN LOVE with your food blog!

You are a brilliant woman. No joke, I'm a 26 year old man. I read your blog. A lot. I'm beyond hungry everytime I read it. Keep making good looking food!

    Comments:

I love chocolate chip cookies! Especially when they're warm and gooey. In fact, once a cookie goes hard and crunchy... I don't want it anymore. I don't know why, I just like soft cookies and nothing else.

So I had to figure out how to keep an entire batch of cookies soft for longer than a couple of hours. Turns out, if you store the cookies in an airtight container with a slice of bread, they'll stay soft. If the cookies last long enough, the bread will eventually go hard. Replace it and the cookies will continue staying soft!

It's like a miracle! Soft cookies forever!

    Comments:

Oh man, I was just checking out you new post before heading off to bed..Geez, I will be dreaming of those Chocolate cookies!! Yum!

it is winter here in New Zealand and the other day at a friends place her daughter made choc chip cookies and then we toasted mashmellows and stuck them between the fresh warm cookies - Yum!

    Comments:

    Bakarella,
I hesitate to give the teacher advice b/c I am a lowly beginner to your exalted goddess status ;-)!
I am going to throw out my two cents anyway (my husband wouldn't be surprised!!)
When I make cookie dough, I double it and sometimes even triple it. I cook what I need and separate the rest into balls on saran wrap. I cover it in saran wrap and roll it into a log and then pop it in the freezer. Then, when I have a craving for quick bake cookies, I am ready to go!!

    Comments:

    Wow. These looks delicious.
I would like to try making them, but I have only ever baked those cookies where everything came in a bag and I only have to add egg and butter. Hence I have a few questions.

How much (weight) is a cup of butter?

When you say a cup of brown sugar, do I pack in the sugar tightly or just scoop the sugar as it is?

    Thanks!

    Comments:

No need to gobble up those ice cream cookie sandwiches all at once. They freeze like a dream and no need to thaw before eating. Frozen chocolate chip cookies are 100% as good as fresh! Wrap tightly in plastic wrap...

    Comments:

There is nothing better than home made chocolate chip cookies. One thing my girls and I like to do is bake the dough in mimi muffin pans. We call them "nookies" :)

I have to say I've tried using a cookie scoop for the batter and I can never get all of the batter to come out if the scoop. Tips anyone?

    Comments:

I don't know if you actually read the 750 comments you get on each of your posts, but...

We did a taste test around our apartment building once. Ghiridelli chips actually came in SECOND! We found that people preferred both the Toll House chips AND the Toll House recipe printed on the bag of chocolate chips.

We tried the chips alone, and several chips in several different recipes. Ghiridelli only won on appearance of the chip. It does LOOK more hearty, smooth, and delicious, but looks can be decieving! Interesting, huh?! We thought that, surely such an "upper class" chip would win out, but it didn't!

You should do THAT experiment and post it!

    Comments:

3 words bakerella... MILK CHOCOLATE CHIPS! you will never go back to semi-sweet again. i am serious! let us know if youy try.

Glad you did these. I was looking for a new chocolate chip recipe this weekend, and first (as always) went to your site but found none. Now I know where to look next time. And the ice cream chipwiches look awesome!

It's funny, just this past Saturday I bought some chocolate chips so I could make some cookies with my son today. Then I got up this morning and found a link to your yummy post in my inbox! I tried your recipe this morning, and they are delicious :) Thank you!

I can't believe it. I completely want some chocolate chip cookies now! BTW I tried making cake pops this weekend and I failed :(

    Comments:

I can just feel those melted chips dripping all over my fingers with my first bite......yummy!!!

    Comments:

Have you ever tried or heard of Guittard chocolate chips. I was introduced to this when we moved to WA. Makes chocolate chip cookies even better. Thanks for the recipe.

    Comments:

I just made chocolate chip cookies, too, after not making them for years. The ingredients I used are quite similar, but have a different personality. Funny, how just a few small differences to a recipe produce such different results. Love your idea of sandwiching ice cream in there, though in that case I'd eat the cookies twice as fast :)

    Comments:

Oh Bakerella!! As always, your pictures look good enough to eat!

I love using cookies to make ice cream sandwiches.

I might have to make a batch of cookies to do just that with the frozen yogurt I made yesterday (though not chocolate... those flavors wouldn't work quite so well). We're out of cookies, so sweets must be made!

    Comments:

Oh my God!!! I'm on a strict diet to loose the 60 pounds I gained while pregnant, and you are seriously making it difficult for me to keep going!!! LOL

I'll sure try them as soon as I'm done!

    Comments:

I love the ice cream sandwhiches with cookies! My friend and I made some cookies last week with some JUMBO chocolate chips we found at the store. OH MY GOODNESS those jumbo chips were so amazing. (They are bigger than the normal chip, but smaller than a Hershey kiss.)I hadn't ever seen tehm before, but if you see them definitely try them.

Love that Cakespy article as ccc's are my favorite!
Cute, fun, ice cream sammies here. I've been going crazy with my ice cream maker this summer. I haven't made sandwiches yet and will have to get on it.

    Comments:

I take it you like crisy chocolate chip cookies. If you up the flour by half a cup to a cup you can get softer & cakier chocolate chip cookies. Yum.

Those look great... Chocolate chip cookies are my FAVORITE and if you use butter flavored crisco instead of the butter they come out amazingly chewy, yet have a nice crispy outside and stay that way...

    Just thought I would share!

Love the idea of using an ice cream scoop to make each cookie the same size! Great tip! Speaking of ice cream, would you happen to know where I can purchase an old fashioned ice cream cone stand?

I use the box mix with the Ghiradelli chips and have needed a scratch recipe, thanks for that, and I see you used my favorite chips. Have you tried silicone bakeware? My muffin tins always end up burning the bottoms after a year or so and my hubby hates paper cups. Thoughts?

I think that yours could kick the butt of the Chipwich any day of the week, Bakerella! Nice presentation with the sprinkles on the side too. As you can tell by the timeline I've been cookie-obsessed lately, and once again you've deliciously indulged my obsessions! :-)

    Comments:

I always look forward to your weekly posts! They always get me in the mood to bake...inspiring and fun! I did have a question, though and since I don't have a Google account I'll have to ask "anonymously". If I don't have a stand mixer, like you do, will one of those hand mixers do the trick in this recipe? Thank you.

    Comments:

Yum! I think I will have to make those with buttercream icing in the middle...my favorite!

    Comments:

Oh yum! I am recently having some troubles with my favorite jeans not fitting anymore. I'm pretty sure it's due to fresh baked chocolate chip cookies! Or maybe it's because of the bazillions of cupcakes I've been making! You're a bad influence!

    Comments:

you - just when I think, hey! she's just like me, a simple cookie recipe will sometimes do - you then pull out the sprinkles and the cutters and the glorious photography stuff

Those ice cream sandwiches look GOOD!

    Comments:

Oh don't use Lilly White flour for CCC. Makes them too soft. Try good old gold medal or one without soft winter wheat.

Wow... very nice. Love the ice cream sandwiches. I am lazy and make mine with graham crackers. I bet my boys would love them with homemade chocolate chip cookies.

You rock! You are so funny and informative. I love baking and baked sweet goods. I am so homesick as I live in the Middle East! Chocolate chip cookies are my very favorite!! Thanks again for this site!

I made these cookies over the weekend...couldn't figure out why mine didn't look like the pictures, even though my wonderful hubby tried to assure me that they did. Half way through the batch, I realized I left out the last 1/4 cup of flour!! At that point, I decided to make bar cookies with the rest of the dough...I spread the dough in a round cake pan (lightly sprayed with PAM), and baked until the top was uniformly golden brown. Delish! My mom would make bar chocolate chip cookies instead of drop cookies when we all wanted choc chip cookies but didn't have the patience for drop cookies...it's still my go-to speed cookie baking method!

I will definitely try this recipe again, and be sure to add all of the flour! Thanks for the recipe!

hi! i tried this recipe yesterday and mine tasted too salty =(

i added a heap of brown sugar and they tasted better <3

My mom makes fabulous chocolate chip cookies. A few tricks she uses that make a huge difference is butter flavored crisco (instead of butter). She also says when she uses milk chocolate chips she puts in the amount of salt the recipe calls for. If she uses semi-sweet chocolate chips she reduces the amount of salt a little. Hope this help. I LOVE your site. You are super amazing. Thanks for all your great shares. :) Terri Moore

These are SO GOOD! I have made 2 batches in the past week and everyone that has tasted them LOVES them. Even my husband - who typically only likes chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven - liked the one that he ate the day after I baked them. Big thumbs up! I will have to be careful about baking them often, as I tended to grab two or three every time I passed by the jar. :)

Just had a dental student tell me about your website and was doing a little browsing - when I go to the trouble to make homemade chocolate chip cookies I stick to the recipe on the Nestle bag EXCEPT - I use the butter flavor Crisco AND I refrigerate the batter just a bit and roll each cookie in regular granulated sugar before cooking - gives it a nice bakery shop look and great taste and texture.
